From Sheila's perspective:

I did most of the planning from Miami and the wedding was in Virginia (I do NOT suggest this to anyone no matter how much support you have at the wedding destination...this is WAY too stressful). My fiance and I nearly missed our plane and we ran through the airport barefoot (security made us take our shoes off) looking very crazy. When we got to Virginia, his family pretty much took over which was great because I was tired and thankful for all help. My mother flew into town and my mentor and sorority sister, Andrea, came in the same day. My mom's aunt, Edith, drove down and her no nonsense way, assesed what needed to be done and got to it. I REALLY love that about her. Once everyone was in town things moved smoothly and it seemed the wedding day would be fine. No one really arguing with each other; no stank attitudes that are common in times of stress. AND the weather was holding up. Sunny days before the day of the wedding.

Wedding day - My maid of honor, Kelia, took me to get my first ever manicure and then it was time to get to the wedding site. Before we got there, the sky opened up and it began to pour. I must admit, I became near hysterical. The wedding was to be a garden wedding and although we had a tent for the reception part, the actual ceremony was taking place on an open air deck. So my maid of honor was driving me and telling me to be calm and I was alternately calling Nick or crying. By the time we got there (a little late because of the stupid rain), the sky had begun to clear up. But then I found out that I didn't have the music to dance with my dad...that started another round of bawling. My mom got there and started helping me dress and Andrea was taking pictures while I was getting ready. By the time I was halfway dressed, a bright sun was in the sky. Though no one was fussing in the groom's room, it seemed like everyone was fussing over me, which made me edgy...ok...bitchy. BUT I was trying very hard not to be a bridezilla.

The wedding did not start on time, much to my chagrin, but wasn't too late. Besides a giggling and crying fit down the aisle, it went smoothly. I must admit time seemed to fly by because as soon as we held each others hands, I swore it was over. The marriage celebrant gave me the wrong vows to say, but I didn't cut my eyes at her as a wanted to and kept smiling!

My dress was a classic ivory satin with a sweep train. I only had one maid of honor and one matron of honor. As I couldn't have a pink and green wedding (Nick wasn't having that...), it was green and blue with some ivory. The ladies wore a green color called celadon (I prefer to think it was apple green...heh). The groom wore ivory with a celadon vest. The best man wore black with a celadon vest and the groomsWOMAN wore a beautiful black dress. The reception was nice...a bit long with all the toasts, but there was a very positive feeling all around. My husband had a surprise for me from my sorority sisters which included a videotape. None of them could come up for the wedding so they made a tape for me. However, something happened as we tried to fix VCR. So I was unable to be serenaded (edited to add that my sorority sister Kay Pea recently gave us another copy). Then came the dances which went so great and am still grinning thinking about them. My first dance with my husband was a partially choreographed dance to Etta James' At Last. Then came my first dance with my dad. He said nice things in my ear about how I've grown up and I'm a woman. It was really touching because my dad recognized that I had grown up.

After the dance I told my mom I wanted to leave. I had hardly eaten anything for the day and I was so tired. After packing gifts and saying goodbyes I called the hotel to make sure they were ready for us. Well those bastids allowed the person who stayed in our room the previous night to stay another night, effectively kicking us out and putting us in a room at a neighboring hotel. I still didn't want to be a bridezilla, or just flat out myself, when incompetence was SOOOOO obvious, so I let Nick deal with it. We still had to go to the second hotel, which was NOTHING like what I had scoured the net for days looking for, but we weren't charged :).

We had our honeymoon in Vermont and that was so perfect in every way that I cannot wait to go back.

From Nicholas' perspective:

We had been keeping a cautious eye on the weather for days. Thursday, Friday and Saturday were supposed to rain and we were worried because after months of planning we were getting married on Saturday. When we got to Washington on Wednesday it was a bright sunny day and we began to feel the weather might remain sunny after all. We set about buying food and making all the last minute arrangements. The night before the wedding Sheila, Kelia, Ariana and I stayed up until 4am tying ribbons on bells as wedding favors, telling stories and doing the last-last minute things. On Saturday morning the sun rose nice and bright but the weather report still favored showers and we were all praying that the sun would shine thorough out the day. Around 1 o’clock we all headed over to Aunt Dee’s to get dressed. Along the way we started to notice huge grey clouds rolling in and privately, everyone began to fear the worse.

We got to Aunt Dee’s with clouds overhead and everyone rushed inside. Now as we all know the bride is fussed over much more than the groom and this was no exception. Once we got upstairs I was so tired from getting so little sleep the last couple of days that I curled up in my dressing room and took a 30 minute peaceful nap. Sheila, I learned on the other hand, was surrounded by throngs of people, many trying to give “helpful” advice about putting on the wedding dress or some such hoopla (and she had gotten even less sleep the last couple days than me). Boris my best man arrived and we got dressed upstairs. Every once in a while we were joined by a few by a few passers by on the way to the bride. Eventually we were joined by my Dad and Uncle Mike who gave me some words of wisdom while I got dressed.

I was looking fabulous in my Ivory tux in about 6 minutes flat and there I was ready and dressed for my wedding day before I even knew it. I came down stairs and as if by magic was surprised with a deck full of faces here to see us get married. Well everything is kind of a blur but I remember ths sun shining beautifuly in a blue sky and waiting to get nervous but it never happening. I walked out on the deck flanked by Boris and Ariana truthfully none of us could really remember what we were supposed to be doing (at least I couldn’t) and let ourselves be guided by the marriage celebrant. The first time I saw my beautiful bride coming down the isle towards me I felt a tear start out of the corner of my eye. Then during the ceremony its self I can’t remember much except holding Sheila’s hand and smiling into her face and tears running down my face. And then just like that I had the pleasure of kissing the bride and we were married. We walked together down the isle and on to the grass where we felt like movie stars with what felt like 30 cameras all taking pictures of us at the same time.

I was really touched by people’s speeches during the reception, and my heart was happy. After the wonderful speeches, the delicious food, and the dancing, it was off to our honeymoon night followed by our honeymoon journey in Vermont, but that’s another story.

I want to thank everyone who was there in body and spirit you made my wedding day perfect and I will remember it like a fairy tale forever.

I Love you all,
Nicholas Armand DeToro Forlenza
